Vanilla Potential in Malaysia.
Based on the world supply of natural vanilla, which is far short of the demand coupled with attractive price of the commodity, RTSB has entered into an agreement with FELDA to buy-back the vanilla green pods planted by FELDA and further processed it for export market.
As world vanilla consumption is dominated by synthetic vanilla (97%), there huge demand of natural vanilla in the world market. Based on the initial planning of identifying 500 settlers to grow vanilla at 1 hectare each, this would results in yields of 3,000 tons of green pods and if further processed will produce a total of 300 tons dried vanilla for export per harvest. The total world export is currently at 4,000 tons.
Country like Papua New Guinea and India have shown that vanilla is a new promising crop that has come on board of their export industry. Looking at the potential of vanilla, both governments have even provided incentives to vanilla growers to add value the vanilla as it is currently being exported unprocessed.
